Bush Tucker at Wallaby Ridge

Bush tucker is another option I've been looking at to substitute food sources. Our property has a myriad of bush tucker so I did a bit of research to see if we have much "usable", "suitable" for utilising in the kitchen...

Well, I decided I didnt want to be like the first fleet who, with lack of staples and crop failure, were reduced to eating anything that they thought might be edible, with occasional dire results! I asked Rob Overell over at Worendo about Sandpaper Figs as a substitute for normal figs, but it appears there is quick competition with the birds. Further research with Tim Lows "Bush Tucker Australia: Wild Food Harvest", revealed the sandpaper fig is a fruit of varying flavour and consistancy depending on growing conditions. This book I borrowed from Canungra Library.

I thought also wattleseed might be an option, but only certain acacias produce the right type of starchy seed for suitable use. Commercially available from South Australia... obviously this is no good for me! (Land Line on the ABC has great little gems about agriculture).

The upside is my just planted hedge of lemon myrtles will be VERY useful in a couple of years.
